  1. The holiday season is all about spending quality time with family and friends, but who says that need only apply to real life gatherings? In this competition, you will be *pairing up with another community member* to design your level as a team! Many amazing collaboratory levels have been produced over the years from community members honing each others' ideas as a team, and the experience of working with and learning from each other while making a great level adds a lot to an already fun experience. If you haven't designed a level with someone else before, this is the perfect opportunity to try it out! If you are having trouble finding a partner - or don't even know where to begin doing that - try posting a message here or posting a message to the CC Discord server. If that doesn't work, email me and I can try to set you up with others who are looking for a partner. (In the absolute worst case scenario I will team up with an odd-entrant-out to guarantee that nobody gets left out.) There will be no level restrictions for this competition: all types of levels are allowed and welcomed. The only "rule", if you will, is to have a strong sense of teamwork with your collab partner when designing your level. (i.e. if you and your partner both create some stuff independently and you lazily copy-paste it all into the same level to create a "collaboration", that effort will be judged much more harshly than a partnership who talked together about their ideas and refined each others' concepts while working together towards a common goal.) Bonus points will be awarded for: * Doing a little write-up alongside your entry describing who did what, how the level came to be, and what the process of collaborating was like for both of you * Giving your level some kind of connection to the holiday season (it doesn't have to be much) * Having some kind of creative/novel usage of random elements (anyone can stick a few blobs in a room for the sake of giving the player some generic monster to dodge, but can you add random elements to your level in a meaningful way such that they couldn't simply all be changed to other monsters or tiles without detracting from the level?)   2. Let's kick-off this season with a Time Trial! http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/641-%7B?%7D/ The theme for this competition, Piecing it Together, has a double meaning. First, the levels themselves are pieced together from other levels. The first level, Bargain Brinks, is a take on a level called Brinks by lookatthis; instead of nine rooms I picked my favorite four and combined them. I also added a few chips to the rooms and a mechanism that discourages flooding the rooms. The second level, Time Trial Mix III, is a mix of time trial levels from 2010, creating a whole new challenge. I think it also comes together feeling a bit like those levels from back then, much like the previous two levels in this series. Secondly, when you set out to plan a solution to either of these levels but particularly the first one, you need to stitch together separate parts of the solution. I considered offering smaller practice levels for each room of the first level but as there was toggles involved and other complexities, I felt it was best to leave that up to you. I do want to stress though that you should create such versions of the level yourself to practice on. I didn't even make it possible for you to practice the rooms out of order, so to maximize your enjoyment with this level, don't force yourself to play the same rooms over and over again in linear order, but rather practice and plan them out separately first. The second level may be attacked similarly with couple of the sections, but it's not quite as necessary if you aren't going for the absolute best time. The point is that any good optimizer should learn to make use of their editor to practice different parts of a level, and if you haven't done that before you should try it with these levels. The main competition will be in MS, but I think this time we can safely throw in any Lynx solutions to the same pool. (This means the levels are probably solved quicker in MS, but if you submit a Lynx solution, I won't rank them separately.) The deadline for this competition is the end of October. That's mainly what I had in mind. I'm excited that CCLP4 has been out for some months now and we can start something like this without needing to fear everyone still being busy on that. Don't get me wrong, I certainly am not yet done with CCLP4, but feel like something like this complements working on that nicely. It's been three years since the last Survival competition, so it's about time we had a new one! http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/642-%7B?%7D/ I combined all the previous Survival levels into this one set, with the newest one, #6 - Impending Demise, being used for this competition. It's built by Lessinath, so a big thanks in that direction. It is similar in nature to the very first Survival level with some key differences that I'll let you discover. The objective is to stay alive as long as possible before the monsters get to you! You may play in either MS or Lynx. The point of these competitions is to have fun and connect with the community. While that's the case here too, this is also your chance to try and see how crazy you are about this game of ours. There is no randomness in the level and there is no way for you to influence the monsters, all you can do is dodge. Then die and try again. I expect most participants to just send in a casual, maybe a decent effort, but maybe someone out there will go overboard with this and plan out an actual method to stay alive for way too long than is healthy. Don't feel pressured to be that guy. If you are that person, please only do it if you find enjoyment in it. The rest of us will then wait for the results. You may solve the level or die in the attempt, it doesn't matter, though it is easier for me to judge this thing if you send in a tws which does require you so reach an exit. I may choose to combine some submissions into a tie if they are close to each other by a few seconds (up to ten, and this clause is here so you don't feel bad about maybe surviving another second or two). I will strive to reply with a confirmation that I have received your entry and reviewed it. I prefer if you use your username and this competition in the email subject. Though it is usually implied, I feel specially obligated to point out a technical requirement for this competition: though you may plan out a method of attack and even use tools that help you in this, your actual submission is supposed to be played by you without any gimmicks. Just use your sense of fair judgement and ask in case you are thinking of something that may be borderline.
  4. Ready to make some levels? This time let's try a different take on building from a palette. Your task, should you accept it, is to create a new level using pieces and concepts from previous create competition entries from 2008 to 2011. This is a total of 72 levels to work from plus a few non-trivial 'filler' levels that separate each competition in the collection sets. The idea is that you build from pieces conceived by someone else (or your former self) to create a unique challenge that is still a tribute to the source material. You can either try to use the pieces without modification (as I have done in the Time Trial Mixes) or just borrow a concept to create your own new puzzle with the same general feel. The easiest place to find the levels that are your starting point is in CCZcreate2008-2011.dat and CCZcreate2012.dat, which you can get here: http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/305-%7B?%7D/ It would be nice if you took ideas from at least three levels so that it doesn't just become a different version of a single level. Don't feel obligated to fill the whole map and make everything cramped. (I'd be curious to see even some smaller levels that still stick to this requirement). If you do make a longer level, please don't make it very difficult. You can be creative with the structure of the level and give it a fun name. There are some crazy levels in the mix to work from and I'd also gladly hear what your reaction to them is. Can you make it work? I'm sure there are some issues with this idea that I'm not thinking of right now, so be sure to ask below and I'll answer anything that is worries you.     Here are two levels for you to compete with, and a bonus level that shows the inspiration for the first level. 17.5 A - Bargain Brinks by lookatthis and Miika 17.5 B - Time Trial Mix III by Miika (kind of) Bonus: Brinks by lookatthis (#41 of 60_Minutes.dat) This time we are primarily competing in MS, but your Lynx solutions are always welcome as well!   6. Get out your map editors and turn on your design instincts! This time we are making a collaboration task like none other! Your job, should you accept it, is to outfit five rooms with something interesting for Chip to adventure through. The rooms are given in a template form in the file below (levels #7-11). Each one has it's own shape and item restrictions. Once I have rooms from all several designers, the idea is that we can combine any of the rooms with each other to make a larger level. In essence you are designing several pieces of a jig-saw puzzle that can be combined with the designs of others! You may enter with just filling in one of the rooms, but of course I would love to see what you do with each room, and how these all combine to make the level with all five rooms. http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/617-%7B?%7D/ Here are some guidelines of what you can do with each room: Room 1. This is the starting room. Use four chips and a blue key. The time allotted for this room is up to 30 seconds. Room 2. This is the next room and it is visited twice on our journey. Include five chips, a red key, a yellow key and a yellow lock (which is opened after losing the red key). If possible, make it so that Chip leaves the room on the first visit with a yellow key and that this is obvious to the player. You may include toggle doors in this room, but note that their state will be swapped once Chip returns here. The time limit for this room is about 70 seconds, but as this is the most complex room more might be needed. Room 3. Include five chips and a red key. You may use tanks and a tank button here. The time estimate for this room is 50 seconds. Room 4. Include six chips and a blue key. Please include a toggle button that may or must be pressed an odd number of times. You may include toggle walls and teleports. Forty seconds might be enough in here. Room 5. This is the ending room and it's shape is the simplest. Is it the simplest otherwise? At least it does not require any chips, but the rest is up to you. You may move the exit. Be careful in including items that are parts of mechanisms elsewhere. Is thirty seconds enough to reach the exit? For each room, be mindful that you include the correct amount of chips. Keep the time limits the same as they are unless you really need to adjust them. You may edit the name and passwords if you like. Only edit the contents of one room at a time, meaning you may move the items in the room, but the mechanisms leading to the exit should still work. You may move the locks that lead to the next room, but be careful not to allow the wrong keys to be taken out. (It's safest not to move these doors.) Don't use some items in other rooms that are reserved for specific rooms, like the teleports, tanks and even toggles. Please don't allow any boots to be taken from one room to the next and be careful with other items as well. Basically, keep in mind that your rooms are supposed to work in conjunction with the rooms from other designers too, so making mechanisms that hinder this is permitted but might not work well in the bigger picture. Comment below on any unclear situations or for any cool ideas you may have that we should all do! The file you submit to me (by sending it to my email valeosote at hotmail dot com) would ideally have six levels, one for each room and possibly one where they are all combined. I would like it if all these levels were solvable. I will accept up to two versions of each room from a participant, but please take into account that this will increase my workload as well, so have some restraint on which ideas are your best. I think I will accept levels that work in just one of the rule sets, but would prefer that they work in both MS and Lynx. You may send in name suggestions for the combination levels that result once I combine rooms from several sources. I fear this one will be a hard competition to judge, but I'll figure out some way to evaluate each participants efforts. I hope to combine my favorite versions of each room into a level I like a lot, but it will also be interesting to see how each designer's rooms all join together by themselves. In any case I am sure we will see some cool creations! I hope you aren't scared away by this high concept but rather take it on as a challenge. Let your creative juices flow!     The Five Rooms

    Version (1.0)


    This set was compiled from the submissions to the April 2017 Create Competition. Participants were provided by a template of five rooms to build upon. The set contains various combinations of these rooms: Levels #2 - #7 combine rooms from different designers into new creations. #2 - Esteemed Entanglements - these are some of my favorite rooms combined. #3 - Desiccated Depository - more great rooms put together. #4 - Awesome Amalgamation - these rooms in turn were a bit simpler in concept. #5 - Fused Furnishings - after the other rooms were spoken for, these were left to be used. #6 - Calculated Conglomeration - these rooms were perhaps the trickiest ones. #7 - Backbreaking Bananas - while these might still be the hardest ones. Levels #8 - #13 are each made by one designer. The individual rooms are repeats from above. #8 - One Hundred Candle Bonfire - by James #9 - Unlicensed Archaeology - by Ihavenoname248 #10 - Testing Room A: Subject #2357 - by RB3ProKeys #11 - The Full Dave - by geodave #12 - Dodgy Dodging - by rubenspaans #13 - Miika's Five Rooms - by M11k4 Levels #15 - #47 are the rooms separately.   8. This one's a good one. http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/621-%7B?%7D/ This time we are running the competition in Lynx! (Of course I forgot to change the file to default to that, so that's why the version is 1.1.) The first level in MS would just have a touch too much boosting so I thought more people would enjoy it in Lynx. I will of course still be interested in seeing your MS routes, so send those too even if we are concentrating on Lynx in the competition. (I'll even try to figure out what your route is worth in Lynx for you if you want.) The first level, Frozen Polyominoes, is one of those chip collecting levels with shapes, but this time the chips surround the shapes instead of forming them. Can you recognize this set of polyominoes, that is, what characteristic defines them? The second level, Linked Lite, is a shortened version of one found in lookatthis's 60 Minutes.dat. I found it to be a fun monster manipulation level, and I hope you will too. Usually we add up the remaining seconds on the levels to determine a score, but this time the disparate nature of the levels calls for something a bit different. A gain of one second in the first level does not feel the same as in the second one, due to both the open nature of the first one and the equalizing last room of the second one. Thus, we'll see what happens if we consider the seconds in the first level to be twice as valuable than those in the second for scoring purposes.   9. Here are two paths designed to be played in MS. Which do you think is quicker? After drawing this picture, I found an improvement to one of the routes. It takes some understanding of the level to do so, but if you can find how to improve either route, leave a comment. If you are stumped and want to know what I found, check the video posted in the competitoin's thread for the answer.
  10. Here is the path used by the quickest submitted Lynx solution to the first Time Trial level of May 2017. The colors indicate the order in which the route was built, in the order red, orange, purple, and blue. This route is ten seconds quicker in MS than Lynx, but still it can be improved upon in MS, making it interesting to compare this with the MS routes posted. There is a video uploaded with this path executed, so check the competitoin's thread for that and other info.
  11. New Time Trial levels! http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/617-%7B?%7D/ You may notice something a bit odd about the levels. First, they may seem familiar. This is because they are heavily based on previous Time Trial levels. I took two levels with heavy random components and edited them to something a bit more predictable. Thus they feel a bit different than ones I might have built myself from scratch, but also they have a quality that is hard to capture in new levels. The other odd thing is that the set does not just have these two levels. First, there is more than one version of both of these Time Trial levels. This is to provide simpler still simpler versions if you don't want to combat the boosting and monster timing. The competition is about optimizing the first two levels, Not Random and Dissenter, but if you can score a better time on the alternate versions (levels #3-5), then we'll count those as your score for that level instead. So instead of Not Random, you may solve either Simply Not Random or Still Not Random; and instead of Dissenter you may solve Simply Dissenter. Note that the time limits for the alternate versions of the levels are slightly lower than that of the main two levels, so the optimal should not be better on them (even without taking into account stuff like boosting differences). If you provide solutions for all the levels, we'll just count the one that gives you the best score, but I may post your other scores too. I realize that this is the last month of CCLP4 voting, so I hope you can juggle your time between all these interesting activities. The deadline for this competition is May 3rd.   14. Were you expecting this? Four years and counting, did you spot the pattern? Your task is to pick a level from CCLP1 and use its arrangement of walls to create a new level. You can pick any level from the range #1-#149, then delete anything you want except for any walls, and finally rebuild it into a new level. If you wish, you can also pick another prominent tile in the level and replace it with some other tile exactly. There's something extra fun about taking someone else's creation and turning it upside down to create something totally new. Or you can take your own creation and tweak it a bit, who knows? This restriction of using the same walls from a different level has proven to be a fun one. You don't need to take it too literally, but I'll notice if you don't. I will judge the submissions myself during March 2017 (or when I am done with CCLP4 voting). I've said before that "I enjoy it when the new level takes the existing wall configuration and does something different with it than the original", but also keep in mind that the level should be fun first and clever second. But sometimes CC levels are clever enough to be fun. And there are many types of fun to be had in CCLP1. I don't know what I'm talking about. I'll just flip a coin to decide the winner, I guess. (And no, I did not do that last year, no matter what you might think of the results!) In any case, carve out some time from your schedule, push back arbitrary (voting) deadlines if needed, and get to work! Notes: -Submissions are open through March 6th where you live! -Do not make a overly difficult level. A moderate difficulty is fine but then it would be nice if it wasn't too long. -The level must be solvable, but does not need to work in both MS and Lynx. I want to take a moment and talk about the future of these competitions. It always takes some effort to run these things, and I've been doing these for some years now. Of course I haven't done it alone, but nevertheless at the very least I've felt a personal responsibility of the bigger picture. The participation levels also fluctuate somewhat and recently we've been at a lull. However, I enjoy these and hope you do too! So what am I getting at? I've decided I have to stop organizing these competitions... at some point. And rather than have that point come up suddenly, I'm announcing it now and will run a certain number of them before I am done. How many competitions do I have left in me? 100. Yes, including this time trial, I will organize one hundred more competitions. This gives me a clear goal to work towards. I already have at least a tenth of them planned, and I think there are some fun ones ahead. How many will you be a part of? Let the countdown begin! You may send in a Lynx solution too, but it will be judged separately, with the quickest solution possibly being awarded 5 Chip Cup points. and it will be judged in the same category even though the route is possibly worth more in MS. The levels aren't too hard to solve. Don't be afraid to send in your solutions even if you sense they aren't perfect, and simple casual solutions are also appreciated. You may enter if you solve at least one of the levels, but solving both will obviously place higher. Submission deadline is March 5th, 2017 where you live. I will judge the submissions without warning during the following days but will accept submissions until I do. If you need a more specific time, you can always ask. To avoid losing on time (it is a time trial after all), get your solutions in early rather than later! You can send in improvements while the competition is running, so there is no downside to sending in something you know might not be your best effort if you had forever to work on it. This is part of the 2017 season of the Chip Cup. Winner will be awarded 15 points, second place 12, third 10 points, and so on. If you win a competition here for the first time, you receive the "You're Winner!" award. All participants who haven't participated in a Time Trial earlier receive the "Run, Chip, Run" award. The designer of the levels and any others who have seen the levels in advance, may enter the competition. Please be fair and do not abuse this rule; it is meant to maximize the fun, not provide an advantage. The levels may receive an update within the first week of their release. This will only be done if there is some significant problem with the first versions of the levels. Please contact me if you suspect something is off. Do not post your solutions or solution times or share them with others before the competition results are announced. All times will be published at the same time, and the quickest solutions will eventually be released. As an exception to the above rule, a participant may 'freeze' their scores at some point after submitting their own solutions. They will not be able to submit any more updates after this, but they may talk about the levels and their times with other people who have frozen their entry. I may update a public list of people who have frozen their score.

    Two levels by Ihavenoname248 for the March 2017 Time Trial. Encased, Just in Case - chips are all along a maze, but what's the fastest way to pick them up, particularly considering you can talk short cuts through the walls?
