Why must you do this to me... let's see... well, I'm doing top 20 because I can't leave some of these out, and they're in alphabetical order instead of best to worst because ordering them the latter way would take way too long.

Braid (XBLA)

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360) (alright, alright, while it may not be the best game in every aspect, playing online is bloody addictive... I've played 100+ hours of it )

Chip's Challenge (PC)

Crazy Taxi (Dreamcast)

Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox)

LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3)

Luigi's Mansion (Gamecube)

Mirror's Edge (Xbox 360)

Psychonauts (Xbox)

Portal (PC)

Shenmue (Dreamcast)

SimCity 4 (PC)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Spyro: Year of the Dragon (Playstation)

Super Meat Boy (Xbox 360)

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

Super Monkey Ball DX (Xbox)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

Tony Hawk's Underground (Gamecube)

Conclusion: the best games start with S (Y)

And I know it's just top 10, but I don't care :P

Also this might change if I think of a game I really like that I forgot to include.

Edit: added Super Mario Galaxy. I cab't believe I forgot that one.

NICE NINTENDO SHANE.

Though, a third of my list is Sega, so I guess I'm no king of variety.

And I like how Ocarina of Time isn't on there.

I'm hesitant to include Minecraft in my list because everyone seems to hate me because I like it so much. The Portal series too.

3. Portal series

4. Chip's Challenge

5. Minecraft

6. Super Mario Bros. 2

7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

8. Super Mario World

Ocarina of time isn't on there simply because it's not on my top 15 :P

It is on my top 20 however.

Also, I don't play Sega games really, which is why no sonic games are on there.

I suppose I forgot Super Mario Galaxy though...

I'm going to make 2 separate lists because I don't think I can fairly compare games I don't play that often anymore with ones I do.

Games I primarily played within the last few years:

1) Super Mario Galaxy 2 -- Full of great scenery and music and varied, fun levels. Getting that 242nd star took may tries, but was so WORTH IT! I also enjoyed spending countless hours optimizing and finding dozens of shortcuts to improve my best times.

2) Mario Kart Wii -- I played this pretty regularly online for about a year after I got it. I also played it online with my friend when he moved to Germany for a year.

3) Tile World & CCEdit -- Of course! :teeth:

4) Guitar Hero 3 -- Love the track list and the presentation more than any other GH game.

5) Donkey Kong Country Returns -- Challenging levels, great settings, AND a Time Trial mode?! Easily makes the list!

6) Super Smash Bros Brawl -- One of my friends is about perfectly matched with me in terms of skill level at this game, so we’ve had many epic battles.

7) Roller Coaster Tycoon -- Somehow building a theme park never gets old. I made it to the bottom of the Corkscrew Follies scenario list last summer--then my

hard drive got wiped. :(

8) Mega Man Day in the Limelight 2 -- A fun (though still in development) fangame featuring an immensely simple yet gratifying core gameplay concept that, IMHO, should’ve been present in every single official Mega Man game from the start!

9) Zelda Skyward Sword -- I haven’t finished it yet and it’s not perfect, but it’s still a refreshing change to the series.

10) Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship Tournament 2010 -- I must’ve built and tested over 30 different decks. Coming up with new, unconventional strategies is something I enjoy.

Honorable mentions: Kirby’s Epic Yarn, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Mega Man 2, 9 & 10, Portal 2, Tetris, Super Mario 3D Land

Games I primarily played at least 4 years ago:

1) Crash Team Racing -- Each time one of my friends came over, we used to play this game for at least an hour. It was so fun we even spent hours playing the demo included in Spyro 2 until I got the actual game.

2) Super Mario Bros 3 -- Full of varied and memorable stages, not to mention all the powerups, this is the closest a Mario game has gotten to perfection IMO.

3) Spyro the Dragon -- As I described it to my friends in 1st grade, “It’s the game you just gotta have!” It was highly satisfying to explore the levels and improve from just starting out to reaching 120% through the years of my childhood. More recently, I’ve also found it fun to speedrun. (Best time starting from a new game to beat Gnasty: 1hr3min.)

4) Yoshi’s Island -- Another example of a game where finishing 100% was an exciting journey of many years.

5) Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando -- Even though I am not a fan of shooters for the most part, I found it incredibly satisfying to build up an arsenal and then find the right weapon to use for the right job.

6) Super Mario 64 DS -- I never owned an N64, so I only got tastes of Super Mario 64 and I could only imagine how awesome it would be to play. Then with this game I got my chance to play it myself. And it was just as good as I had imagined.

7) Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon -- Better than the original: fun minigames like skating. Worse than the original: frustrating minigames like whack-a-mole.

8) NES Zelda 1 -- Alas, I fear we may never again get a Zelda game with top-down, 2D, grid based, simple but challenging maze-like dungeons that don’t have to be completed in strict order

9) Heroes of Might and Magic III -- An old but somehow still very fun strategy classic

10) Super Mario Bros Deluxe -- This reincarnation of the original Super Mario meshed best with my love of strategizing and optimizing because of the individual level score challenges.

Honorable mentions: Yoshi’s Island DS, Kirby’s Adventure, Pokémon Emerald, Super Mario Bros 2 (USA), Super Mario World, Paper Mario (original and 1000-Year Door)

Ocarina of Time is easily the best game of the series to me.

Well, that's a pretty hard one indeed, but let's try it anyway:

10. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Gamecube)

9. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)

8. Goldeneye 007 (Nintendo 64)

7. Contra (NES)

6. Banjo-Tooie (Nintendo 64)

4. Pokemon Gold (GameBoy Color)

3. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo Wii)

1. Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64)

Logical (Amiga)

TimeSplitters 2 (Gamecube/PS2/XBox)

Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PC/PS2/XBox)

I dunno. I haven't played too much OOT recently, so maybe I'm forgetting how good it is. It still doesn't beat my top 3 though. It might surpass Majora's Mask if I ever play it again, which I'm sure I will.

1. Ocarina of Time :P

2. Majoras Mask

3. Skyward Sword

4. Super Mario World

5. Bomberman

6. Chips Challenge

7. Minecraft

8. Mario Kart DS

9. Lemmings / Oh no! More Lemmings!

10. Super Mario 64

OOT 3D would be on the list if they hadn't removed all the bugs and glitches. Those were part of what made OOT so great.

This was rather a fun list to compile! I haven't played all that much, but here's what came to mind, in order according to release date on the platform I used. (I left out any sequels to games already on the list.)

Digger

Minesweeper

Chip's Challenge

Super Mario Land 2

Mega Man III

Kirby's Pinball Land

Tomb Raider II

Metal Gear Solid

SSX

Grand Theft Auto III

Given the chance, I could easily play any of these games for a day straight right away!

M11K4, If you like minesweeper, you can try my version which you can resize so the tiles aren't so tiny. You can also set size options, and the number of bombs you want to find, as well as an undo function if you accidently hit a bomb, and want to keep on playing. Complete with source code.

Goto: http://www.powerbasic.com/support/downloads/games.htm and look for "Mine Sweeper Game" about 3/4 down the page.

My dad never let me have any video game consoles, so I haven't played many games (that aren't on the Wii). My mum, when she moved to Corsica, bought a Wii, so that's pretty cool. I've also been a bad kid and downloaded classic games and emulators.

1) SMB3

2) Sonic CD

3) Super Mario Galaxy 1/2

4) Super Mario World

5) Sonic 3&K

6) Super Mario 64

7) Chip's Challenge

8) Sonic 2

10) Sonic 1

Though I also have Brawl, I never really got into it...

This. Almost every poor review I've seen of Skyward Sword has boiled down to the reviewer being anal about the game using cell-shaded graphics.

I must argue that the best video game story I have seen is probably the Portal series, followed by the Myst series. Games such as Driver: San Francisco are also pretty great in the storyline department; what I wish more games had.

I haven't played any console games made after like 2003, except for playing other people's games. Choosing games for this list would be tough. My era was Super Nintendo and Playstation, and between those, very much Squaresoft and Nintendo. I'll just name some of the games that impressed me most, and that I still like and possibly play in emulation, since my playstation died and my super nintendo is just annoying to set up.

1. Super Metroid

2. Chrono Trigger

4. Xenogears

5. Final Fantasy IX

5. Metal Gear Solid

6. Kirby Super Star

7. Earthbound

8. Yoshi's Island

9. Super Mario RPG

10. Final Fantasy VII

I don't think it's that odd, exactly. VI has good characters, but the plot was less interesting, by a lot. VII had good characters too, but weird mechanics and the ugliest, nastiest aesthetics. It's subjective, but I just prefer IX in those respects. Its gameplay was interesting too, and of course it had better graphics.

Oh, it's fine, I respect every opinion on the matter, I was just asking because I personally largely prefer FF VI and VII to IX, possibly even IV comes before IX. Personal tastes ;)

My accounting would be different if it factored in the various computer games I play. I don't really know how to compare a FF game to something like Dungeon Crawl or Chip's Challenge. Games that are different every time, or involve abstract problem solving to such a degree, are hard to compare with an engrossing story.

Then again, I maybe ought to have included Cave Story on that list, since it's the same kind of game.

I found Yoshi's Island totally annoying, and a big letdown from SMW. The concept was decent, but the controls were difficult and I didn't care for the cartoony backgrounds.

Yoshi's Island had a much better soundtrack, story, and level design. I gotta admit that it's not "your standard platformer", with Mr. Baby Mario who you gotta carry all around the place. Irritating stuff, but if you can get over it, I believe it's better than SMW.

I really like most everything about its aesthetics and level design. It's a little too easy though, maybe, except for those darned bonus levels. And the screeching wail of Baby Mario is truly wretched, but it's supposed to be.

I like the controls better, although the egg-throwing mechanic was still tricky and made the final boss battle unnecessarily difficult.

I'm jumping in 6 months later just to agree with this post. It's definitely the best game in the series, and my only issue would be the sudden difficulty spikes with the "Giant" battles (which, of course, were designed by a totally separate development team).

Also, thanks for the recommendations everyone, to all those games I haven't played yet.

Although I haven't played a wide enough variety of games to place a list of Top 10, I know for a fact that Kerbal Space Program is my current #1, as it has been for all of 2013.

I haven't noticed this thread before until it got bumped.

It's difficult to pick only 10 games, so here's a top 20-something. The games are not ranked (it's hard to compare games of different genres against each other), but in general I like the games near the top better.

Rock Band 3 (Xbox 360)
Emerald Mine (Amiga)
Bricks (PC)
Spacechem (PC)
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PC)
