You called the dat file CCZ-TT-0312.dat, now I've deleted my Time Trial file! xD

Do we still get points for time?

Points are given for time, and you MUST finish the level. I'll extend to April 15th since it's a monthly thing and Tom put the file up in mid-month.

Also I hope you guys noted: To be played in Lynx, and you're judged on the items you have at the end of the level. Using a key removes you points.

I feel like not giving any points for time sort of defeats the "tradeoff" nature of this competition which was demonstrated so brilliantly in last month's entry (are you willing to sacrifice time points to get more treasure?).

In this level, all you have to do is get everything. Using keys to open up the two doors isn't a sacrifice because the amount of points that the keys behind the doors are worth outweighs the amount of points lost while opening the doors.

Yeah, I realise that you can collect everything. I think 1 point for every 5 seconds on the clock is the only way to lower the chances of a tie.

A lynx requirement. Interesting.

To help others out, my route is one move away from the next 5 second mark, so if you feel your route is quite good, I think you don't need to squeeze out every last possible trick from the book. (I'd like to see said book actually...) I won't work on the level any more either :-)

In the future, should we change this timing rule to be compared to the best time achieved and not so dependent on the actual time limit? This could be calculated by subtracting a point for every 5/10 seconds you are slower than the best time. So if you know your route is decent, but don't feel like getting all the boosting right,or randomness, you'd still be fine. I think it might serve well to distuinguish the TH from the TT like this. It would help take the focus off the time limit in this format, as long as the level itself has some sort of mechanism that doesn't allow for all the points to be collected at once.

I also recently posted some more thoughts on the competitions in a blog entry here on CC Zone, so check that out too :-)

If 1 tenths of a second is possible to record, then yes. I think that will be better than the 5 second per point rule. Maybe the number of squares each player has touched could be an option perhaps?

Sounds like a good idea :)

This competition should be more like a puzzle than a disguised time trial, which is what it has felt like the last 2 rounds. A level like JB's Vulcan or Pieguy's too many keys would be interesting.

I think giving points for time is okay, as long as there's some reward for taking too long. :) That will help distinguish this competition from the Time Trial.

It took me a while to figure out what you meant, but I guess I was the reason for the ambiguity. When I wrote 5/10, I didn't mean "five tenths", but "five or ten", refering to how many seconds have scored a point in the past. In any case, I think we all agree that forcing a strict "better time = better score" system isn't a good idea, but having the time factor in the score somehow isn't all bad. I like the ten second rule, and it would work even better if compared to the best submitted time.

And on counting how many tiles are visited, please no. It just makes it too complicated to look for the best route. It would actually be worse than judging by time down to a tenth of a second, if you think about it. Besides, a level designer can fill the level with chips to mimick this effect to some extent, so it all depends on the level.

I think as long as a level contains plenty of isolated items that take some amount of time to get, along with a fairly non-linear structure, the competition can work well. Or, much like last month, have a level with a very short time limit that makes it impossible to get everything.

Originally, the competition level had a few blue key doors so you could gamble and get more keys, as you only had one blue key. Probably should have left it like that.

Also nice guys letting me feel I'm not even close to J.B. or pieguy in level designing, though I already acknowledge it.

Still an appreciated very good push in the back (Y)

I didn't mean to offend you, Rock - last month's level was lots of fun . There's nothing wrong with needing to be quick to collect items, but, as M11k4 put it, it's not the only way to go.

Sorry Rock. We liked your Treasure Hunter levels. In fact, mine's the weakest.

Well the first one was linear so meh, the second one was too much related to time. I'm now trying to see how I could make it so it feels something new.

I think the key to designing any good level is to tackle the familiar in a new and fresh way. :)

A reminder: this deadline is quite soon, but you can still make it!

Hopefully I'm not the only one with an entry...

I have a score now (the ones digit is a 9), but the run is by no means perfect...though I did collect everything. This level gave me a much-needed chance to "brush up" on my Teeth dodging skills.

Just to clarify--When you say "due 0:00 April 15th", do you mean in 10 minutes, or in 24 hours and 10 minutes from the time I posted this? I'm guessing you mean the former, just want to know for sure.

I decided to share my solution since we don't know how soon the results are otherwise released:

My time is 329.

Impressive! By the way, all the levels I create for the CC Zone competitions will be submitted into CCLP1 voting. :)

I realize now that it would be nicer to see the clock in the video so I went back to record it again. I also managed to find something small that I missed before in the route. My time is now 330, and I'll await the judges' decision whether to still accept this score a little late or not.

My time was 338 on a first solve which could probably be improved upon, but I forgot to submit it. Whoops.

If you picked up all the stuff, you could still share the route out of interest. Is it difficult for you to post an avi of the tws on YouTube? And we're waiting for you to start that LP you've mentioned!
