Chess - Candidates tournament

Recommended Posts

We could organize one on Chess.com as they have tournaments which can be made invite-only. A non-paying member can make a tournament with 12 players, but if we need more I *could* get Mom to use her premium account to make a bigger one...

Or we just bracket-it-up here and play individual matches on chess.com, it doesn't have to be sophisticated :P

Count me as another person interested in this.. (as long as we do it correspondence-chess style...I'm absolutely horrible when you bring time controls into play)

If we do it on Chess.com, I believe everybody would play everybody which means quite a few games at once, so I'm good with just setting it up on here like Rock said. Agreed with James about time^

We could do round robin, or pair people up by their approximate levels (for example, James and me might be about an equal match based on our previous games, but I don't remember all that well). If we do Round Robin we might as well just have someone start a tournament on Chess.com and invite us all, as then it will automatically do all of the pairings and scoring for us, but if we want to play fewer games at once and maybe do it knockout style we could just organize it here.

I see no reason why not to use the tournament structure at chess.com, as allows for a much better understanding of what is going on. Do tell when you are starting, so I can lose every game.

More or less the same here, I'm about as good as James, but will always blunder before my opponent.

So interested would be:

BigOto2, jblewis, James, Flareon350, M11k4 and I.

That's 6 of us. Assuming FJepsen's in too, that's 7 of us. If we go knockout style, another player in would be perfect.

I'm not sure we'll get enough bang for our buck if we do a knockout tournament. Half of the players will only play a single game, and even if you do happen to win through to the final game, you will barely have played any games at all.

As for chess skill, I agree with Rock that we're about on the same skill level (and I also agree with his blundering comment, lol). @Trevor, we played twice IIRC, I won the first one (my first ever chess.com game!) because you blundered and missed a defendable mate in 1, and you won the second one because I didn't have any clue what I was doing. You're definitely better. :P (My chess.com rating is 1106, but I "should" be quite a bit higher. I've lost several games on time due to RL reasons and once resigned all 20 tournament games I was playing at the time in a bizarre moment of rage...lol. My blitz rating is 8xx because I blunder a piece every 5 moves :))

Oh, and as to the actual topic (on who will become the challenger for the world championship), the tournament is gearing up and looking exciting!

We should just arrange Round Robin

Basically everyone faces everyone else and we compile the results and have some rankings to do something else after, probably a standard elimination bracket thing. So it's preliminaries.

The great thing about Chess.com is that once you set up a tournament, it handles everything all the way to the finals and then ranks people by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. If there is a tie, it uses this interesting tie-breaking system where it takes people's ratings and evaluates the initial chance that a certain player would have won in the first place.

Ok so should we set up a Round Robin on Chess.com then? Who wants to go ahead and do it?

It looks like it's going to be me. I currently have these people's usernames:

- BigOto2 (me)

- MichaelW2012

- rockdet

- Jamesa7171

- M11k4

- Flareon350

JBL1 (J.B.? - You said on Skype that you were jblewis10, but that account doesn't seem to exist while a "JBL1" exists on Michael's friends list)

And then some others who haven't signed up here but that we know about:

- ManipulatorGeneral

- Markus24

- Icy001

In order to start the tournament I still need BlazingApollo, FJepsen, and ajmiam to give me their usernames and/or create an account on www.chess.com. I will send invites to those who are in (not including those who we know exist but haven't posted here) but I won't let the tournament start.  :)

It will take a few days to get this started as apparently I need a f****** Premium Membership to start tournaments on the site, and I used to have one until it was revoked because they lost my credit card number.

Ok, just signed up....my username on Chess.com is ajmiam (same as here) so it should be pretty easy to find me.

It's not fixed. You just come in whenever you can and play your move against your current opponent. Of course we should try to play it on the spot so the tourney advances quicker, especially with Round Robin, that's a grand total of 45 matches before even going to the brackets with 10 players in.

Gelfand just defeated Aronian to leave Carlsen alone in first...it's his tournament to lose now. (though you could have arguably said that before the tournament even started)

OK, I managed to get my premium membership earlier than expected and I have created the tournament. If you signed up here, log on to Chess.com and check your notifications in the upper right corner of the page (usually an orange box). If you can't find anything that looks like a tournament invite in your inbox, please let me know so I can add you.

It will automatically begin on Thursday around mid-day if everything goes as planned, but I can delay it as needed.

Ah, correspondence chess?  Never played that before...I've played in lots of tournaments, all over the board games for me.  I went ahead and joined the tourney just now, BTW.

Update: I set the time per move to 1 move per 7 days, per Michael's request as he is unavailable around this weekend which would be longer than the 3 day time limit. Also, I don't want people to lose their games on time just because they don't have Internet or are busy for 3 days in a row. Please try to move faster when online, obviously, as we don't want it to continue for like 3 months.  :)

"You can only play in 1 tournament at a time. If you'd like to change this, upgrade your account now!"

No thanks Chess.com. I've resigned from my current tournament so I can play in the CCBBC one. My rating got trashed even further, but I'm okay with that. I can enjoy the challenge of building it up again :) (it's 946 now LOL)

Alright. Everybody is registered and is all ready to go... which means this is the LAST CALL for anybody who would like to participate at the last minute! If so, please let me know as soon as possible before tomorrow morning (about 12 hours after this post). It is possible to add people to a tournament even after it becomes full, if I edit the settings.

OK, the tournament has started, but how do I get to play my games?  It says the tournament has not started even though it started 3 hours 15 minutes ago according to the scheduled start time.

So there has been talk (including some before the tournament started) about having a knockout phase afterwards. We would take the top (2, 4, 5, 6, 8, your # here) from the round robin phase and have them play against each other in some way in a second round to determine the tournament winner.

Advantages:

* makes the tournament more interesting for most players, as if it becomes clear you are not going to win the tournament (either because ajmiam somebody is dominating and/or you've lost a bunch of games early) you still have something tangible to play for besides pride
* a couple blundered games won't preclude you from winning the tournament

Disadvantages:

* makes the tournament even longer
* complete domination in the opening round can be wiped out by a single mistake in the playoff round

IF we are going to do something like this, here are some possible formats that have been thrown around: (each playoff match would presumably be a best of 2 games, white and black for each side, or they could just be single games with white going to whoever finished better in the round robin)

A* Top 2 make the playoff round, with 1 vs. 2 in the final (obviously :P)
B* Top 3 make the playoff round, with 2 vs. 3 and then the winner of that match playing 1 in the final
C* Top 4 make the playoff round, with 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3, and the two winners of those matches playing in the final
D* Top 4 make the playoff round, with 4 vs. 3, the winner of that match vs. 2, the winner of THAT match vs. 1 in the final
E* Top 5 make the playoff round, with 4 vs. 5 to start, and then proceed as in suggestion C (with 1 facing the 4v5 winner)
F* Top 5 make the playoff round, same idea as suggestions B and D (5v4, winner plays 3, etc.)
G* Top 6 make the playoff round, with 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5 to start, and then 1 vs. the highest #'d winner and 2 vs. the lowest #'d winner, then those two winners in the final
H* Top 8 make the playoff round, with 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5 to start, then (highest #'d winner) vs. (lowest #'d winner) and (3rd winner) vs (4th winner), and then those two winners in the final

I* Your format here

My vote goes to G. Domination in the round robin phase is rewarded by automatically progressing to the second playoff phase, and there is more excitement in general because players have two "cut lines" to chase: those near the top of the round robin standings can chase for the top 2 spots so they don't have to risk elimination in the first playoff round; and those nearer the bottom can chase for the 6th position to get in the playoff round period. I also think 6 is ideal in terms of allowing maximum entertainment (it's more fun for players to proceed onwards) without making the first round entirely pointless. It doesn't really matter to me, though, as long as we iron out what's going to happen (or NOT happen) as soon as possible.

OK, that's a bit too complicated for me to organize on my own. Since you seem super-motivated to do a second round thingy, maybe you could help organize that once the time comes?  :)

I was afraid it would sound super complicated. It will be really simple once we figure out how we want to do it (that is, IF we want to do it).

It's super easy, I will organize it provided that it happens. My vote was initially H but I'm now convinced C and G are the best options out (I won't play past Round Robin anyway, I suck too much). Vote quickly guys.

And he sure tried to. :P Congrats to Carlsen.

Also, it sounds like the winner is C.

There appear to be a few people in the tournament right now who are running low on time. If you haven't been to Chess.com in a while to play your games, be sure to do so within the next 2 days or so before the clocks run out!

Who's winning?

I'll like to participate if there will be another tournament at some point.

I'm also interested in playing bullet and blitz tournaments.

I'm Zernix on chess.com.
