January 2014 Create Competition - Simple Template

Recommended Posts

Happy New Year everyone! Let's kick-off this new Chip Cup!!

Your task is to download this http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/download/310-competition-suggestionccl and use it as a starting point to create a straight-forward level for a new chipster to play! The template provided was made by Syzygy and it only has floor and walls. In the spirit of having the voting for CCLP1 just close, the judging will be done by someone who has not played a tremendous amount of CC, so do not make the level overly complicated. If you wish, you might try to make it a kind of a Nuts and Bolts level that would fit right after some lesson levels.

Important! You may not add any more normal walls or remove any of the existing walls. This shouldn't be a tough restriction considering all the other tiles you have available.

Notes:
-Submissions are open as long as it is January 2014 where you live!
-The level must be solvable, but does not need to work in both ms and lynx.
-The level must be new; it must not have been released earlier.
-Please give the level a name, time limit and set a password.

-You may submit more than one entry, but please keep the levels distinct from each other.
-Points will be deducted for late entries, but will be accepted until a notice is posted in this thread.
-You may write about 100 words describing your creation and the process of creating it.

-Entrants receive the normal prizes: the "You're Winner!"-award, Chip Cup points, and "Tool Box"-award for first time entrants.
-Please ask about other unclear situations.

Submissions will be judged in the beginning of February 2014Email and attach your submissions to valeosote at hotmail dot com.

List your username and this competition in the subject. Keep it short and simple, something like: "January Create - James"

Everyone is welcome to join!

It would be rather extraordinary if an already existing level had that exact wall configuration. :)

So we can't add walls as borders? I don't really like making levels without proper borders but I can always add other tiles to fill in that gap :)

Yeah, that bothers me too...I suppose I can make the border out of blue walls, though.

I guess it's ok to add borders using normal walls because some designers always do that, but please then fill in the whole border or none at all.

Eric, yes, you are right :P I copied part of the rules from before and didn't change that part.

Ian, it wasn't completely my idea, but thank you anyway. I was actually looking at your latest levels and thinking about how much work you must have put into them, and then hoped you might participate again in this competition. It's been two years since the last time :)

Is it allowable to place blocks/creatures, or (in MS) other tiles on top of the existing walls?

So the judging will be based purely on gameplay, and not on any shmart-ash approach to the level design?  ;)

I think I'll allow for layer shenanigans with the walls. Keep in mind though, that using crazy techniques in the level might confuse a novice player. As for judging based on game play, I believe that to be a very possible outcome, though the judge might take into account other aspects when making a tough call between levels. I'll see if I can find someone who is also willing to write out a bit of reasoning for the results. :)

Keep the questions coming!

And your eyes open for a new Time Trial!!

sounds fun! I plan on joining

this will be a challenge since those walls aren't exactly cut out into even rooms. But I like this idea a lot.

a dumb question but: I assume when writing the email it is really <emailformat>? not with "at" and "dot" spelled out?

mobius, yes replace the 'at' and 'dot' with @ and . to get through. Typing it out normally in a forum like this can increase spam to that address as bots search for email addresses. I do strive to reply and confirm I've received each submission, so if you send something in and don't hear from me, you can also try the PM feature here on the forum.

On that note, I have received two submissions already! Good job guys! I haven't looked at the levels myself, because there's a chance I might submit my own entry. You can still send in updates or other levels while the competition is open. You also may rename the file you submit to include your name, but that's optional.

There's a time trial opening up soon!

oh ok, I did not know about that, thanks for the tip :)

and wow, how did people submit levels already  . Also I'm totally for having more future contests similar to this one (Y)  I like this idea of having pre-placed things in the level.

Submission time for this competition is now over. Thanks to everyone who sent in their creations! I knew a couple more of you were working on participating, so am a bit sad to not see your efforts realized in time. You can still send them in for our enjoyment if nothing else.

Anyway, I have now sent the levels I have to the judging party. That means I also can try them myself, as I thought it wasn't fair for me to play them earlier while participating with my own submission. Should I release the levels for you guys too, or do you want to wait for the results first? If I release them now, should I first not reveal the names of the designers to keep you guessing a bit?

Who's creative juices are ready for the next competition? While you wait, why not try a level in the Time Trial? :-)

release the levels now. I'm not a fan of this 'keep everything secret' stuff. I don't care if you release the names.

Please release the levels now so at least we can have something while we wait for the results.

I have now uploaded the submissions: http://cczone.invisionzone.com/index.php?/files/file/350-cczone-january-2014-create-levels-packaged/

I chose not to indicate which level was from which designer for now, partly because it was easier for me at the moment.

I also got a message from the judge that he has played most of the levels and we can expect the results in a timely fashion. He says that some of the levels are a a bit long and frustrating. I take that to mean that some of them aren't :) Feel free to weigh in with your own comments on any of the levels!

Wow! Great submissions by all! This won't be an easy decision for the judge at all.

ian

I agree

I'd kind of like to see voting and comments by everyone; to have more diversity and opinions. I've played most of the levels, when I play them all I'll post my comments on them here.

The judge has actually finished playing and evaluating the levels weeks ago, but I thought people wanted to first comment on the levels before seeing the results. I didn't really mean for this part to take this long though, so we'll try to get these results up pretty soon. (For real this time.)

Hi!

Here are the levels, that I played. The levels are in rank order, number 1 being the best. There was just few levels that I hated, others were fun and playable including levels that I didin´t finish.

1. Variety and Exploration - Flareon350

This was a really fun level to play. I didn't need to think too much how to advance and I only died a couple of times. This was not frustrating at all like some of the others. It wasn´t too short or too long.

2. Training Grounds - jblewis

A fun level. It was clear what needed to be done and where I needed to go. I don't think I died more than once.

3. Burning Chrome - lookatthis

This looked more complicated at first, but it turned out to be straight-forward and fun.

4. Newbie Zone - BlazingApollo

Great level! The teeth were well used to scare me without actually being large threats. It was good to have a variety of simple puzzles.

5. Here There Be Tygers - mobius

I didn't finish this one. Too much moving blocks and searching. Teeth were really annoying in this one. I didn't realize all the chips were not needed until it was told to me.

6. Stuck against a Wall? - PB_guy

I didn't finish this one. I didn't know what to do with the blocks and monsters. It did feel nice at the start though.

7. There are hidden things in my house - mobius

I got tired of searching what to do next so I didn't actually finish this one. The invisible walls were annoying.

8. Always a Dull Day - M11k4

Way too many blocks with a chip under them or something else I got stuck too many times. I had no interest in playing through all of this.

9. Alignment - eric119

This felt too complicated and I did not solve it. Getting the red key was difficult and I wasn't sure how to open the two traps.

10. Nuts - chipster1059

This level was just nuts. It looks complicated and is not easy to play. I died several times and couldn't finish it even after trying a lot.
